FAQ

How much does Hollywood make in a year?

The average movie costs around $100 million to produce. The average movie costs around $100 million to make. If you made ten movies per month for a ten year, you'd have enough cash to buy a small country.

Your island would be yours, complete with an airport, power plant, bank, post office, police force, fire department, school system, hospital, sports stadium, theater, and cinema.

If you don't find this to be fun, then you are probably insane.

Why is Hollywood calling this Hollywood?

D.W. Griffith created the first movie industry in California in 1887. It was named in honor of its Los Angeles location, known at the time as "Hollywood".

Because it was so exciting to visit, the name stuck. People would travel all the way from other countries to see what was happening.

Hollywood is still a part of our culture today. We have movies, television shows, music videos, commercials, etc. We call them all "Hollywood."

Why are so few independent films ever distributed?

Most indie filmmakers assume that their films will get picked up by distributors.

Because they love the work, distributors will likely buy their films.

But this is rare. Distributors often take advantage of independent filmmakers.

They will use techniques such as delaying the release of a movie until after the awards season has ended.

They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.

Distributors will also attempt to keep movies away from viewers until they have spent hundreds of dollars on popcorn, tickets, or candy.

They don't want any of those profits to go to waste.

What's the difference of an indie movie and a foreign-language film?

A filmmaker typically makes an independent film. This is because he or she makes every decision.

The opposite is true for foreign language films. They are usually produced by a larger production company.

They often hire writers and actors from other nations.

Professional translators are also available to ensure that the dialogue sounds natural.

How To

How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then pays half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.

Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.

To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.

How old must one be to get a HWOF star

When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.

Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?

The HWOF does not intend to be a historical monument. It's meant to be a tribute to those who have contributed to film history.

What happened to the stars that got stolen? The thieves took approximately 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
