FAQ

Hollywood's fame?

The answer was simple. Because they were willing take risks and do something completely different, it became famous. They had the fortitude to make films that would remain in people's minds for years.

They were also bold enough to try new ideas.

How much does Hollywood make a year?

It costs about $100 million to make an average movie. So if you made ten movies a year for a decade, you'd have enough money to buy a small country.

Your island would be yours, complete with an airport, power plant, bank, post office, police force, fire department, school system, hospital, sports stadium, theater, and cinema.

If you don't find this to be fun, then you are probably insane.

Why don't more filmmakers use crowdfunding websites like Indiegogo or Kickstarter?

Crowdfunding sites can be great as they let you reach out to potential investors.

But most filmmakers don't think they're qualified to ask for money. They feel they need someone else who can vouch for them.

Because they are still in their infancy, they do not believe that anyone should invest.

Instead, they spend months focusing on their project and hoping that someone will notice.

They realized that they hadn't prepared properly when they launched their campaign.

They end up with only a few donations, instead of thousands of dollars.

Why is it called Hollywood?

D.W. Griffith established the first film industry in California, 1887. It was named after its location in Los Angeles, which at the time was known as "Hollywood."

Because it was so exciting to visit, the name stuck. People came from all parts of the country to see what was going on there.

Hollywood is still an integral part of American culture. There are movies, TV shows, music videos and commercials. We call them all "Hollywood."

Why do so few independent films ever get distributed?

Indie filmmakers are assuming that distributors will be interested in their films.

Because the film is loved by the public, they believe distributors will be interested in it.

But, it is very rare that this happens. Distributors often profit from independent filmmakers.

They use tactics such as delaying a film's release date until after awards season has ended.

They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.

Distributors also try to keep films away from audiences until they've already spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, popcorn, or candy.

They don’t want to miss out on these profits.

Are foreign sales worth more to Hollywood than domestic?

Yes, but not very much. In 2017, foreign revenues accounted for about 17% of total revenue. Domestic revenues made up 83%.

Over half of the world’s population is found in overseas markets.

Many people will want to see your movie even though they may not have the opportunity to watch it at home.

What are the steps to starting my own distribution company

No. A distributor is required to operate a distribution firm.

You must follow certain rules, even though you are not distributing films of other people.

You cannot charge different prices to different theaters. Also, you cannot charge different fees to different customers.

You also can't sell your services to other companies.

How To

How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.

You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. You would owe $15,000. If you were first Nominated in 1990, for example. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will remove your name from this list.

What age is required to become a HWOF star?

Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. After receiving a star, one may still be nominated again after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Your family members can nominate you for a star. If there are no known living relatives, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place the memorial marker in front of it.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF was not created to be a historical landmark. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened to the stolen stars? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
