How To
How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF can be found at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who made motion pictures, television or radio, as well as music and other aspects of popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.
To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with your name inscribed on it is also included. This plaque is affixed to a concrete base in front of the designated star.
You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.
The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pays half of the $12.50 fee to the artist or organization. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.
After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. You would owe $15,000. If you were first Nominated in 1990, for example. For example, if your first nomination was in 1990, you would owe $15,000. However, if it had been in 1980, you would owe 10,000.
To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.
How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?
When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. After receiving a star, one may still be nominated again after ten years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
Nominating you can be done by family members. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.
Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?
The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.
What happened to all the stars stolen? The thieves took approximately 1,200 stars. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
