Animated people were first created in the mid-nineteenth century, after William George Horner invented a device called a zoetrope in 1834. This device was built around a drum. The images could be moved from one to the next. Emile Reynaud invented theatrical projection in 1876 using this principle. He was the first to start animation using celluloid ribbons.

Sullivan-Bluth Studios

Although Sullivan-Bluth Studios is not as well-known as Disney, their contributions are as important as any other studio in the history of animation. Don Bluth, who was a Disney animator, founded the company in 1978. He contributed to several classics. His human touch is what gave animation its unique character. Sullivan-Bluth Studios animated characters are treasured in homes all over the world.

Sullivan-Bluth Entertainment was originally known as Don Bluth Studios. It is Don Bluth's vision, talent and inspiration that gave birth to Sullivan-Bluth Entertainment. Morris Sullivan, a mergers & acquisitions broker who was a passionate fan of traditional animation, founded the studio. Bluth's company filed for bankruptcy in 1985. Morris Sullivan who was a financial advisor, stepped in and saved it. Bluth and Sullivan co-created a feature-length cartoon together and a Japanese attraction in the early 1990s.

Hanna-Barbera Productions

Hanna-Barbera produced a series cartoons for children in the 1960s with partners the GAB (Ruby-Spears) In addition to its successful Saturday morning cartoons, Hanna-Barbera created many feature films. Despite difficulties, Hanna-Barbera produced the vast majority of American television cartoons. Sullivan's character Felix

After a series, Sullivan's character Felix saw a resurgence in comic strips, a musical homage and in a newspaper strip. These animated cartoons were popular for decades and may have stayed popular if Sullivan had lived longer. However, Sullivan was plagued by alcoholism and syphilis, and the series was ended in 1931. Joe Oriolo created the character again in a television series in 1982. Sullivan's estate never left the Felix cartoons to Messmer.

Although Messmer and Sullivan worked together on some cartoons, the Felix cartoon would not have been as well-known without Sullivan's marketing efforts. But Sullivan is the one who gave Felix his name, and Messmer's biographical sketch suggests that the cartoons might have been more successful if he had designed them. The cartoons were also quite popular in Japan, where Felix is one of the most popular characters.

Studio Sullivan

The fascinating story of Felix the Cat, created in Sullivan's animation studio is a fascinating one. While most animation histories ignore Sullivan’s past, the truth of the matter is that he was a wildcat renegade who didn’t care for the rules or protected intellectual property. Sullivan was born in Paddington in Sydney, Australia. He immigrated to America in 1910.

In 1914, Sullivan moved to the United States and was hired by the McClure Syndicate to work as an assistant to William Marriner, the cartoonist and comic strip artist. He also adapt Marriner’s comic strips for McClure, the New York Evening World and Sambo and his Funny Noises. In 1914, Sullivan joined the Raoul Barre animation studio, where he worked on the film adaptation of Helen Bannerman's popular children's book series Sambo and his Funny Noises.
