How To
How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF is located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.
You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.
If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.
The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pays half of the $12.50 fee to the artist or organization. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.
After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.
Contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to get your name removed from the HWOF and to repay any outstanding debts. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.
What age is required to become a HWOF star?
Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
A family member can nominate your name for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.
Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?
The HWOF does not intend to be a historical monument. It's meant to be a tribute to those who have contributed to film history.
What happened to the stars that got stolen? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
